The German automaker has initiated the construction of a new manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. This site will be used to build the new BMW 3 Series.

BMW has invested an estimated $1 billion to setup the new manufacturing plant in Mexico and it will feature a body shop, paint shop and a production line. It will use solar panels to generate electricity thereby minimizing any CO2 emissions and improving resource efficiency. The plant will also focus on water conservation. According to BMW, it will have the lowest water consumption per vehicle compared to all other automaker’s factories.

The automaker has employed around 1,500 new employees for the plant. They are being trained at the Munich plant since 2015.

The production of the new BMW 3 Series will begin in 2019 and 150,000 units will be built per year.
