2024 BMW X5 And X6 Come With Refreshed Looks, Updated Powertrains

The new and improved BMW X5 and X6 are making a big splash in 2024! Not only do they have a fresh new look on the outside, but they’re also packed with powerful updates under the hood. And if you’re curious to check them out for yourself, you won’t have to wait much longer! These two beauties will be making their first public appearance at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance in March and will hit the assembly line in April at BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Powertrains

The X5 sDrive40i, xDrive40i, and X6 xDrive40i have received a major upgrade under the hood. They now feature a brand new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, complete with the latest hybrid technology. This powerful and efficient engine is equipped with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that adds an extra 12 horsepower (9 kilowatts) and 147 pound-feet (199 Newton-meters) of torque. This means the engine now delivers a total of 375 horsepower (280 kW) and 383 lb-ft (519 Nm) of torque, which is a noticeable increase from the previous generation’s 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm).

BMW predicts that the 2024 X5 and 2024 X6 xDrive40i can bolt from 0 to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in just 5.2 seconds, shaving off a mere 0.1 seconds from its previous time of 5.3 seconds.

On the other hand, the X5 and X6 M60i xDrive are powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that now boasts the latest in hybrid technology with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. With an output of 523 horsepower (390 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm), these models will leave others in their dust as they soar to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds.

The X5 xDrive50e PHEV comes in the place of the xDrive45e. This electric hybrid is powered by a combination of a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor that now delivers a total of 483 horsepower (360 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) – an increase from the previous 389 horsepower (290 kW) and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm). With the updated electric motor producing a powerful 194 horsepower (145 kW) and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm), and with the ability to temporarily offer 331 lb-ft (449 Nm), the X5 xDrive50e PHEV can reach 60 miles per hour in a speedy 4.6 seconds – faster than its previous time of 5.3 seconds.

BMW has definitely stepped up its game with the xDrive50e! The automaker has upgraded the battery to a more impressive 25.7 kilowatt-hours, leaving the previous 17.1 kWh unit in the dust. And to top it off, the unit can now be charged up to 7.4 kW on AC power. This new setup promises an electric range of approximately 40 miles, which is impressive.

All three engines now come equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, making shifting between gears a breeze. The transmission has been updated with an electric oil pump and torsion dampers, giving you an even smoother ride. If you opt for the M Sport package, you’ll get access to the Sprint setting. This setting automatically shifts into the lowest usable gear, puts the powertrain in its sportiest mode, and provides you with the full electric boost from the mild-hybrid system.

Refreshed Appearance

The updated BMW X5 and X6 have received some modern tweaks on the outside, but the real magic happens on the inside. The automaker has taken notice of the details, with a narrower outline for the headlights and sculpted accents along the kidney grilles. The X5 even has an optional illuminated grille to add a touch of flair to the front. Meanwhile, the X6 comes standard with the sporty M Sport package that includes an octagonal design in the lower fascia. The V8-powered M60i xDrive models are also sporting a bold look with quad exhaust pipes.

For those who love to stand out, there are plenty of new color options to choose from. From the Blue Ridge Mountain metallic to the Brooklyn Grey metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic, there is something for everyone. For those who want something a little more unique, there’s the Frozen Pure Grey metallic. And if you’re feeling bold, you can opt for Marina Bay Blue metallic on the X5 M60i xDrive, or Isle of Man Green metallic on the X6 M60i xDrive.

Inside, the X5 and X6 have received a high-tech upgrade. The screens are now housed in a single, curved glass display that consists of a 12.3-inch information screen and a 14.9-inch instrument monitor. And to add a pop of color, there’s an ambient light bar with 15 selectable colors to choose from.

New Technologies

Driving just got a whole lot easier with the addition of Highway Assistant to the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package. This system allows you to take a break from holding the wheel on limited access highways, giving you a moment to relax and stretch your arms. The system operates at speeds of up to 85 mph (137 kph). The Assisted View mode on the instrument cluster displays all the vehicles detected by the cameras and sensors in the current and adjacent lanes, providing an extra layer of awareness and safety.

Parking just got effortless, too, with the Parking Assistant Professional. This system records your vehicle’s movements for up to 656 feet (200 meters) and can even replay them in reverse, making it a breeze to maneuver your car into tight spaces or challenging angles. And with the ability to control your vehicle from the My BMW App on your smartphone, you’ll be able to bring the car right to you without having to move a muscle.
