Volvo has opened a new chapter in the company’s history creating a new assembly plant in South Carolina. The first vehicle to come out of this factory will be the 2019 Volvo S60 sedan. The automaker plans to slowly expand production to make way for the XC90 crossover by 2021.
The Volvo S60 will be the first Volvo car ever built in the U.S. The production will start in the 3rd quarter of 2018 with the South Carolina plant serving as the sole production unit for the sedan.
The S60 is based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and comes with the latest safety and infotainment features including City Safe, Pilot Assist and Autobrake System. The 2019 Volvo S60 sedan will provide customers a number of engine options including a T5 2.0-liter FWD engine, a T6 turbocharged 2.0-liter AWD engine, a T8 Twin Engine AWD (PHEV) and a T6 Twin Engine AWD (PHEV). It is the first time Volvo will produce a model without a diesel engine variant.
The S60 sedan is priced at $35,800 with deliveries starting later this year or earlier in 2019.
